Hanoi authorities will cancel 29 planned fireworks displays for the capital city’s 1,000th birthday bash to save money for flood-affected provinces in the central region, the municipal Party’s Committee announced Friday.
The 29 sites were previously chosen for fireworks displays on the symbolic date of October 10, or 10/10/10. The committee said funding for the fireworks event will be used as disaster relief for central provinces.
But fireworks display will still take place in the My Dinh National Stadium, where a shipment of fireworks exploded on Wednesday, killing two Germans, a Singaporean and a Vietnamese.
The municipal authorities also called on individuals and organizations to collect money for the flood-hit residents, adding the People’s Committee will send representatives to visit the provinces.
At least 52 people have been killed and 21 others are still missing in flooding after one week of torrential rain in central provinces.
